چکیده

We present the results of a kinematic survey of the dwarf spheroidal satellite of M31, Andromeda IX, which appears to be the lowest surface brightness and also the faintest galaxy (MV = −8.3) found to date. Using Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic data, we have measured its velocity relative to M31, its velocity dispersion, and its metallicity. It exhibits a significant velocity dispersion σv = 6.8 +3.0 −2.0 km s , which coupled with the low luminosity implies a very high mass to V -band light ratio, M/L ∼ 93 −50 M⊙/L⊙ (M/L > 17M⊙/L⊙ at 99% confidence). Unless strong tidal forces have perturbed this system, this smallest of galaxies is a highly dark matter dominated system. Subject headings: galaxies: dwarf — galaxies: individual (Andromeda V) — galaxies: individual (Andromeda IX) — galaxies: evolution — Local Group

Pre-DEIMOS Pilot Surveys for DEEP

DEEP is a multi-institutional program designed to undertake a major spectroscopic survey of 10,000 field galaxies to I ∼ 23 with a new instrument (DEIMOS) on the Keck II 10-m telescope. The scientific goals include exploring galaxy formation and evolution, mapping the large scale structure at moderate to high redshifts, and constraining the nature and distribution of dark matter and cosmology. ...

A radial velocity survey of low Galactic latitude structures: III. The Monoceros Ring in front of the Carina and Andromeda galaxies

As part of our radial velocity survey of low Galactic latitude structures that surround the Galactic disc, we report the detection of the so called Monoceros Ring in the foreground of the Carina dwarf galaxy at Galactic coordinates (l, b) = (260◦,−22◦) based on VLT/FLAMES observations of the dwarf galaxy. At this location, 20 degrees in longitude greater than previous detections, the Ring has a...

Triangulum Ii: Possibly a Very Dense Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy

Laevens et al. recently discovered TriangulumII (TriII), a satellite of the Milky Way. Its Galactocentric distance is 36 kpc, and its luminosity is only  L 450 . Using Keck/DEIMOS, we measured the radial velocities of six member stars within 1 2 of the center of TriII, and we found a velocity dispersion of s = + 5.1 km s v 1.4 4.0 1. We also measured the metallicities of three stars and fou...

Dissipative dark matter and the Andromeda plane of satellites

We show that dissipative dark matter can potentially explain the large observed mass to light ratio of the dwarf satellite galaxies that have been observed in the recently identified planar structure around Andromeda, which are thought to result from tidal forces during a galaxy merger. Whereas dwarf galaxies created from ordinary disks would be dark matter poor, dark matter inside the galactic...
